I'm no EV car Evangelist, but this is still pretty cool...

Also cool is that Dalhousie University is like 1 hour away from me! Score one for the little province of Nova Scotia! :)

Now to work the charging times down to a full charge in less than 5 minutes equivalent to gas or diesel and vastly improve the infrastructure in North America...

This is great news for the jalops of the 2050s and very cool development ..

I think 500k life might be enough though if we can crack the ultra fast charging nut, approx. 300 miles in 5 minutes..

While that is nice, I think I would rather have a battery that is capable of going a minimum 500 miles between charges first.

Yup, the two big hurdles to me are the fast-charging getting down to gasoline equivalent and the BIG one is infrastructure...it is just not there at all (at least here in Canada) to support mass EV use and will need a LOT of development in the coming years...

I’d say 600km to a charge would be OK for me...most common non-hybrid, vehicles can get that to a tank nowadays. The other thing that would be important is range related to temperature....don’t electric cars take a massive range dip when cold weather hits?

Now, the important thing... how is it pronounced? Dal-house? Dal-hous-ie? Dah-loy-se?

It's not there south of border either.  That said,  I think if someone figured out that 5 minute 300 mile charge, I think the infrastructure would get built rapidly, especially at gas stations since it'd be a natural progression from their current business model..

They do, which is why you'd want to get to 500 miles per charge,  so that you were still around 300 per in winter..

Haha, it’s pronounced ‘Dahl-how-zee’ :)

It was founded and named for this dude:

Is the hit really that huge? That’s a pretty big gap...

Maybe so, and since it’s just a cable and plug (really), you could just attach them to the side of normal gas pumps until ICE cars eventually get phased out...

In warmer temps, you can use the A/C system as a heat pump, which is pretty efficient (~5x heat for every unit of energy used by the AC). But when it gets super cold (below -15c), you have to use a resistance heater, which dramatically reduces range (as energy in = heat out).

I don’t know how it scales (so I might be assuming percentages when it'd be raw miles), but I know the real world articles I read from a year or three ago the 80ish mile range cars were down under 50..

Yep, when it’s really hot, too.*

In regards to the range since most EVs can get a 3/4+ fast charge in 30-60 minutes, I would rather go further than stop more often.

*I could be wrong

Not wrong, my ELR does less than 30 miles electric on a 40 degree day (and uses the motor as a heater whenever it’s under 32), 45 or so when it’s 60-75 out (and I don’t use any heat or AC), and just under 40 by the time it’s 85 out and sunny. Not sure how much is battery vs AC related on the hot days, but I certainly notice when it gets hotter the range falls faster

Thanks! When I was working up there us Americans were struggling to figure out how to pronounce it.

They do some really cool research there, this long life battery stuff is pretty neat!
